And...

Weekend happened...It was okay...compared to the lousy weekend I had previously.

This weekend , I had been to Downtown Ottawa and this place reminded me of the plush places of Paris....This was a goood place to see. Well, there is a parliament, and everybody can walk into the canadian parliament!!! I dont think any other country would do that!! There is one mall called "CarlingWood mall". It is FULL OF senior citizens. There are apartments here which are meant for retired people. These are called "Retirement Suites". Man! I guess this city fits the bill of "Pensioner's Paradise" VERY VERY well.

The weather is gradually improving and we can see the sun is actually trying its level best to bring the warmth.

There is a lake (or river?) called Ottawa. When I came here, it was a flat land of snow and Ice. Now the ice is gone (70%) and the water looks really blue.

Well, I am still trying to find the bus numbers. I have went in the opposite direction as many as a dozen of times.Apart, from all this, I caught three movies on TV. The best one, was "The Untouchables".Nice movie.

Mandalism ..

More reservations. And this time it will affect all the premier institues - IIM, IITs JNU and the likes. Vote bank politics ???

With passage of time, one thinks reservations has to reduce. But, in our country the reversal has happened and now its getting frenzier. The MHRD is proposing a 27% quota for the OBCs in the above mentioned institutions ( I have no clue as to why the med institutions like AIIMS, JIPMER,PGI have been left out. fishy ;-) )

The reservation bill will not be implemented till the assembly elections are over. HMMM interesting. Should people vote for teh UPA govt or not ? - will it be a double edged sword.

Why are people still behind reservations for post-graduation studies. Why doesnt the govt look for improving the quality of primary education? try to alleviate the standard of life of the OBCs, minorities etc. How will reservations solve the problem ??

The creamy layer in these category will again make use of the reservation quota. Sons of IAS officers will be IAS officers. We will have IAS families, engineering families , a medico families etc etc from these sections, but these will represent just 1% of the whole targetted audience.

The acadamecians are already fuming about the proposal. The politicians have taken care not to heat up more, the already blazing summer by postponing the implementation of the reservation bill after the assembly elections. Will the monsoon by dry this year ?? Only time will tell.

Btw, anyway this policy can be stopped ? Can Supreme court do something about it ?
Will SMSes work time similar to the Jessica Lal case. ???

One small PJ

What do you call a Canadian Citizen ?
Answer :- Canadiga.

Okay. One more PJ whenever it occurs to me.
At a temperature of -3 degrees and snowfall, we chose to move into our new apartment.
There is snowfall in april in Canada and they calll it as "spring winter" it seems...

I met my old college mate Subramanya ( GD and Richie, remember "Kudre Motte"? ).
I think even Kumar knows Subramanya. He is from MES high school.

So, I know quite a few people here.

But the main problem with the apartment is that it doesnt have a phone.
I need a phone.

Flash thought.
Some guys have got ways with the girls.(I write this sentence for memory)
Anyway dude, I really admire your pataaifying skills.

I am planning to see a movie called V for Vendetta. It is directed by the Wachowski brothers. There is a Basic Instinct2 released here.

And on Sunday, we heard a lot of Rang De Basanti & MAala Maal songs on TV !!
Man! it felt like home.

Well, I plan to go to Montreal this weekend.
Montreal is supposed to be bigger and more "happening" place.Ottawa is full of government buildings and high-tech companies and also old men and their wives walking with scarfs and woolen caps with their dogs. The city stops at 8:30.That is a little too early even for me.

There is a lot of white geese flying around the city. So, it looks like some birds sanctuary. Also there are traffic signs for "Geese crossing" & "Ducks crossings" like "school children crossing".Talk about living in harmony and following the traffic rules.

Accident..

My car was hit by a speeding car from behind yesterady. This incident left a dent on the bumper and made the bumper little out of its original place.
It happened on the BTM main road, near the building named "Seattle". It was a normal slow drive, with every one travelling at 30kmph and me having eyes wide open not to bang into someone. But, the other driver wasnt that careful. Bleady hell, he overestimated himself, his car, his brakes, his abilities .. blah blah blah..

I was furious, but I did not shout at him. I stopped the car, had a look at the dent (which wasnt major), gave him a loook and asked him to be careful and left the place without creating any ruckus. There were a few reasons to do so.

1. If I had continued for a few minutes more solving the issue, the whole road would have been jammed and there would be hazaaar people who would have cursed me ( I wouldnt handle so much curse u c ;-) )
2. I once banged a bike enroute office. The contact was at a perpendicualr angle with the mistake being entirely mine. All the bike guy said was "Dont worry dude, it happens". This left a lot of guilt within me, and from then I have been a careful driver.
3. A similar incident happened during the recent Kudremukh trip. My friend was overtaking a bus under a blind curve. A biker from the opposite direction travelling a 70kmph controlled his biked and managed to save himself without hitting the bus or the car. ( Rossi would have been proud of the control the guy displayed). All he managed was a cold stare which induced a lot of guilt in us.

Now it was my time to do the returns, and I returned without much tantrums. Hope the guy has learnt his mistake and wont repeat it.

I JUST HOPE

Ottawa is a good place, but it is sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy.
Probably more sleepier than Mysore.

Man ! consider yourself LUCKY if you find 10 persons on a busy road.
Ofcourse there are cars zooming at unbelievable around everywhere.

The apartment search(for my friend (and me?) ) continues and hope it is to end tomorrow.

Nortel Office is like Vidhana Soudha here.It kinda looks like that.
It is a huge place and everyone knows this place.Great facilities.
It is BIG and AWESOME, and better than the swanky Infy Bangalore/Mysore Campus.
But buses are huge , empty and infrequent.

And the weather is merciless in the night. If asked, any Indian will easily walk on burning charcoal in this weather. And they will enjoy the stroll on the charcoal.

And they say, this is the summer.

For a guy who had never seen less than 10 degree Centigrade, man! it is like Brrrrrr....

I have got some mobile numbers. I will call you guys as soon as I get some time!

alma mater

Today, I woke up at around 12 and when I came out of my room to attend to daily chores, I saw four aged people(looked like two couples) walking around in my hostel wing. At first I thought they must be relatives of some kid and were here to spend a sunday ...but there was something different about them...they did not have the oh-this-place-is-new-to-me-and-i-am-lost look on their faces, generally all visitors have such a look..but these people were perfectly comfortable..I did not bother to find out who they were..

I saw them again..when I was going for lunch..they were talking to hostel G-Sec and he was holding our hostel t-shirts.

During lunch, my wingmate informed that the men were from the batch of 67!!and they were here to show their rooms to their wives!!! I found it unbelievable..I can't imagine taking my wife to pesit, 40 years after my graduation..just to show the place I studied..I am not talking about iit as I am still here and what I feel about this place may change..anyway..coming back to the point..why is it that I dont feel the same amount of belongingness towards pesit?even when I was in pesit, I never felt it was MY college..it was just a college were I studied..why is it so?because I never spent more than 5-6 hours per day in the college??is it because I did nothing other than attending lectures at campus?? or is it a plain and simple reason like pesit can never give me what iit gave to these people?I dont know..or is it a common phenomenon, as in most of us dont feel it? if it is a common thing, then again why is it so?

I reached Ottawa

Hello Guys,

I am in Ottawa....It is not THAT cold as I thought it would be....

I am having the usual difficulties of damn veggie food.....And to add to this I havent found an apartment...So cooking has not yet started.....

Okay bye,
Sudeep

Dosa and thirst

I had two extremely tasteful dosas in the morning at home at around 8:00 am, drank some water, had my cuppa tea and boarded the office bus. Well this is a routine - I have my breakfast, water (stressing water seperately as I have almost half a litre)and tea and travel to office by bus.

But on the days I have dosa, my mouth becomes parched after an hour or so.
I have never experienced thirst when I have idlis considering that both idlis and dosa are made of the same ingredient - rice and tur dal.

Now, is it cos of the oil applied to dosa or the Aloo palya or the mode of cooking. Well there might be a research paper by some BSc-Home Science graduate on this one.

If the gastronomes have an answer please let me know

office of profit ..

A lot of ruckus was created over the "office of profit" controversy.
Jaya B was the first victim. And many followed. Sonia was the high profile exit (shes like Sachin tendulkar of indian policits. Any move gets so much media attention). Sonia - the sacrificer, Sonia compared to Mother theresa. Is our nation so obsessed about Gandhis, white skin etc etc.

Some more high profile exits followed, the latest being Anil Ambani. TOI says its a tactful business move by the younger Ambani scion. Well, good move Anil. But, your 22km run for the Mumbai marathon was more impressive ;-).

Now, I do not have an issue with MPs from the Rajya Sabha quitting. Some Tom Dick/Harry will get nominated into the house. The real worry is about Lok Sabha MPs. Are we going to see elections contested again to fill these seats. If so, who will bear the election costs ?? Election commision ? Isnt there any fine imposed on these MPs for? Please please lemme know.

Vrroming to office..

After a long time I travelled to office by bike today. Infact I do not remember when was the last time I raced my bike to office. I had dropped the idea of bike rides on Hosur road considering it unsafe. But today I vouch that it is one the most safest ways of travel on Hosur road. At no point of time you can travel beyond 50kmph on this road, thanks to the traffic. And it is particularly safe for me as my bike doesnt travel beyond 60kmph.

Most of the ride was on the part of the land between the drinage and the actual (call it the dummy shoulder). Infact this tract of land supports the maximum two - wheeler traffic. :-) It just took me < 1 hour to reach office.

I plan to travel back home at arnd 2:00pm and this was the reason for the wonderful BIKING experience. Well it might be a different story now, with the HUMID AIR replacing the cold waves and not to mention the high pollution levels.

However, if the exp is not so badd, I would like to try it a few more times in the coming days

Black hole sun

After quite sometime, I have tried a "black" script. :)
Do let me know , how this is .

[FADE IN:]

Empty canvas lay on the floor of a house.A MAN has a color palette and his paintbrush ready. The MAN walks outside the WOODEN INTERIORS of his house. An ATTRACTIVE WOMAN sits on a chair as the man walks out.

EXT. FOREST - DAY

The HOUSE is in the middle of a thick forest. Very little sunlight penetrates and the crickets chirp loudly. The sounds wane in the volume. Dry leaves on a partially wet forest floor. It is early autumn.

Then, there is complete silence.

The Man wanders into the house.

INT. FOREST DAY

MAN to the woman
Some time ago, there were two of us in this house. I remember her eyes, her long legs. Her body was my canvas. She was my sole inspiration.
(pause)
Things were so tangible.Just like my older paintings.

MANcontd.
Now, I use a lot of black. And I dabble my brush with patterns.I dont do my theme paintings.

WOMAN
Theme paintings ?

MAN
"Theme paintings" are a a series of paintings which are of a common theme.Simplicity and innocence are out.

The Man places his pallete and the brush on the table as he continues....

MAN
I havent yet created my masterpiece.I have to finish one last painting, to create my best work of theme painting.

WOMAN
So who was she ? How did you meet her ? If I may ask ?

MAN
She was everything to me.

MAN
I was a young rascal who denounced the world and selected a self sufficient life. This forest took care of me just like the other animals here.

WOMAN
I think it was a little weird and eccentric choice. Didnt you feel irresponsible and disorderly.

MAN
Disorder ? I'm interested in anything about disorder....chaos.
(pause)
Especially activity that appears to have no meaning. It seems to me to be the road toward freedom.

MAN(contd)
I met her one day. She was wearing red gown.

WOMAN
A red gown ? In a forest ?

MAN
(laughs)
She said that she ran away from a party. I didnt ask her why.....My girl, Wanda, was a very private person.

Tha Man gives a tense laugh.

WOMAN
Go on. Im listening.Tell me about Wanda.

MAN
She was interested in Astronomy.I was interested in painting her. We decided to paint a series which involved the stellar evolution and her moods. The "stars part" was to satisfy her desire. And I wanted her to be in my paintings. She was my biggest inspiration in my paintings.

WOMAN
Do stars have life ?

MAN
Wanda thought so.She told me they are just like human beings. They are born, they thrive, they pollute their ownselves, they die .They haunt us as black holes. They maybe reborn.

The MAN takes an old PAINTING and clears the cobwebs.

The PAINTING shows a cloud and a woman's face with blue eyes, gazing at the cloud. The cloud is a bright golden yellow.

MAN
You can see the clouds and a beautiful Wanda's face staring at the giant cloud of gas. This is the nascent stage of a star. The cloud is a a beautiful yellow. This was my first impression of Wanda. I loved her blue eyes.I loved her face and I said that to her more than a thousand times.

WOMAN
It's lovely.Looks like you were madly in love with her at that point of time.

The MAN takes the SECOND painting. It shows a green forest and a bright sun and a nude, beautiful woman lying on the forest floor. The SUN is throwing bright white light everywhere in the painting.

MAN
Our sun is in this state.Just after its "Young Guns" days , but still shining and full of energy and heat.It is bringing good feel to its entire surroundings , and going really good.

WOMAN
Whats that on her hand, in the painting ?

We zoom into A GOLD RING, which is seen on the painting.

MAN
Oh. That is a ring which she loved and wore all the time.

WOMAN
It is such a beauty.I think she loved it a lot.

MAN
Time flew by. We realised we were not the ideal couple for each other. She wanted to sell this for money. I wanted to complete the whole series. We painted out next painting.

The NEXT PAINTING shows a Star with a BLUISH tinge and Wanda resting her face on her hands. A teardrop runs on her glowing cheek.

MAN
Although, the star is still very hot, it gives out blue light. It's core is disturbed with helium, but at the outset it is still fine. That was her exact state of mind.Wanda was disturbed everyday after our frequent fights. The whole theme of the painting is blue.

WOMAN
I liked the blue mood in this one.

MAN
The next one is an absolute genius. You have to see this.

Then the Man brings the NEXT painting. As he brings the painting, there is a sharp shiny glint in his eyes.A glint that can be interpreted as achievement.

MAN
My fourth painting depicting the red-giant star. A red-giant is...well....a RED GIANT. I thought of a lot of red while I painted this one.
(laughs)
Wanda said that the core of the red giant is corrupted with Helium. The Red Giant is not a fully dead star. But it is tortured to death....The exterior of the star becomes thinner and thinner and fades away into the infinte space.

The MAN holds the painting towards the woman.

The THIRD PAINTING contains a lot of red. It shows a RED CORE of a star and an exterior RED fading from the core......At the right end of the painting, the exterior red of the star is mixed with intense blood red. At the extreme right corner, Wanda is depicted. Wanda covers her slit throat which is dripping with blood, as she cries in despair.

The Woman gasps.

WOMAN
(slightly tensed)
How did you visualize this painting ? What was Wanda's reaction , to this !!!

MAN
(sharp)
I slit her throat.I used the blood.

The Woman smiles.

WOMAN
I think it is a very innovative concept.

The Man starts walking near the door and gazes outside.

MAN
(pleased)
You think so? Thanks a lot.
(pause)
For my last painting, I need an idea.Do you have an idea ?

As the man turns around to see the woman's reaction.....

The WOMAN is disfigured. Her face is blood stained. A ring appears on her hand. The WOMAN is WANDA's ghost.

WOMAN
(cackling voice)
Wilfred, we can finish the final painting together.I will set you on fire, I'll scatter your ashes on the canvas and we will make the "Black Hole" painting. Bring your black oil paint and we will use water colors for this.

As she says this, a ball of fire devours the man. He shrieks in agony.......

CAR CAR YELLI NODLI CARR..

Today I planned a different "time pass" for myself enroute office. I started counting the number of cars which had more than 1 passenger, including the driver. Amazingly the count was only one. I might have looked into almost 100 cars today of all makes, colors and most importanly dimensions.

Imagine a single person occupying 5*12 ft of moving space on the road. Compare it with 7.5*40 ft bus which carries around 45 people. Such a waste of space :(. The cars are the main reason for the pathetic traffic situation on Hosur road (infact everywhere). This makes me feel guilty sometimes. TP turning to Frustration???

Out of the 100 odd cars I observed today, I am sure 40 would have found their place in the new MLPL (multi level parking lot) in my office. I feel a rule should be made by my company authorities that they will not allow any car into the campus between 8:00 am and 9:30 am. And no cars will get out between 5:00pm and 9:30 pm.

Will that reduce my travelling ?? An easier solution is to join Mindtree. ;-)

Well the question is should ppl taking car have a different office timings? and will this help decongestion?

Probably ...

in the pre-independence days , the conversation between a moderate and an extremist would have looked like this :-

Pro-War: I'm going to jump out of this third-floor window.

Anti-War: Please do not do that, you will hurt yourself.

Pro-War: No I won't, I will land safely.

Anti-War: You will probably break both your legs.

Pro-War: No I won't, I will float gracefully down and land on a soft bed of flowers.

Anti-War: You will seriously injure yourself, maybe even die.

Pro-War: Why do you hate me?

Anti-War: I don't hate you. Don't jump.

Pro-War: Why do you want me to break my legs?

Anti-War: I don't want you to, I'm just pointing out that that's the likely result.

(Pro-War jumps from the third-floor window, breaking both his legs)

Pro-War: I'm fine, I'm fine!

Anti-War: No, you're not fine, you've broken both your legs. I can see the bone jutting out.

Pro-War: NO, I'M FINE!

Anti-War: You're bleeding, I'm going to call an ambulance, we have to get you to a doctor.

Pro-War: This is all your fault! Your negativity made this happen!
Anti-War: Gravity made that happen—I just warned you.

Pro-War: Traitor!

Anti-War: //sigh.....
If you have played HalfLife, for quite sometime, you dont shoot directly at beasts on the spot. You try to trap them in corners, and if they are standing in front of some containers which contain explosives, you shoot 5 bullets at the containers. The containers explode killing the beast (instead of you directly pumping 500 bullets into the beast).

Okay, that was a passing thought.

To draw a very crude conclusion, thats how, in general, humans learn. They adapt. Thru' out history, they modified / took advantage of the surroundings to screw the other bigger beastier creatures and thereby establishing their supremacy over many other animals.

neanderthal_man

Guys, if you get a chance to watch this and this documentary on Discovery Channel , then please see this feature!

It is 1 hr of awesome infotainment. Some parts may be pure speculation, but it triggers your imagination (I can guarantee you that much!)

There were several parts which struck me about this feature:-

->The population of Homo ergaster (our ancestors) on this planet was approximately around three thousand!!!! Probably in Bangalore city market (right now!), we will find three thousand people!!

->All humans (of all races) trace their origin to the Mitochondrial Eve.Here is what wikipedia says about "Mitochondrial Eve".
Imagine a family tree of all humans living today. Now imagine a line from each individual to their mother, and continue those lines from each of those mothers to their mothers, and so on. Going back through time the lineages will converge as sisters share the same mother. The further back in time one goes, the fewer lineages there will be until only one lineage is left — this is the common matrilineal ancestor of all the humans alive today, i.e. Mitochondrial Eve.

See WikiPedia

->Adam and Eve Originated in Africa. There is the "out of Africa" migration theory. This is shown at the beggining of the documentary.

->The history of mankind is shown as a big tale. Discovery of uses of Fire , Invention of Fire in this documentary

->The speculative tale Neanderthals reaching Europe.....The tale of the two Neanderthal Heroes is really touching.Europe was "harsher" to Neanderthals because, they were never exposed to cold weather. They killed using spears. Spear is a short range weapon unlike a bow & arrow. (If you have played the Age of Empires, you will appreciate this trivia). So Cro-Magnons finally win the battle because of their bows and arrows,

->I dunno who will replace us ? This thought takes me to the movie "PLANET OF THE APES". A unique movie with a philosophical twist in the end.

->Well this post is just a haphazard collection of thoughts....But do see this documentary if you get a chance.

Updates

Well the past few days have been exciting.

#1
I met one person (my immediate Paris manager). We had a great presentation. It was a technical presentation. About the challenges they faced in developing a fantastic wrapper around an RTOS (VxWorks). They called it as "VpWorks" because he and the Vice President of Nortel wrote that wrapper and VP stands for Vice President.I googled the VP's name and I saw a dozen IEEE papers on many subjects. This person is around 43+ years old. But the GLINT and the PASSION in the eye when he talked about the challenges he faced , the funny system of 10 Euros per bug and the spirit was awesome. He refers to his software as "my baby". This presentation nearly charged me up like hell.
He said I love technical presentations....They are refreshing!
Wow...

#2
I played two glorious pranks on my teammates and as a result I am applied with so much Holi color that my new shirt is gone for a toss.

#3
The french managers were also not spared. They are shocked to see this (I think). They are already tomato red because of the heat!!!

#4
Anyone, any news ??

Reading T-shirts .

Message T-shirts suck, when the messages are atrocious
I get to read a few daily in the GYM. Now a days the color of some T-shirts make me start moving in a different direction in GYM (though there is not much space around) trying to avoid ready the lousy message again

One of the better ones is of SP .. it says gold, silver,COOPER (empahasizing on the LEE COOPER brand).

Some suckier ones are like these

1. Sex is like air. You will not realize its importance until you stop having it. Its writter in black on the algae green T-shirt. arghhh
2. I thought your girlfriend the move you like .. phewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww..

Alas there are no good ones to quote in here:( :(

And yes...

The weekend is over before i began....wtf....And I am here sitting at eight in the morning and trying to pin a blog post.

Back from a birthday party for my 2 year old nephew yesterday. I think it has become very common to host parties with magic shows, games etc.Magicians calling people on stage and cracking jokes .... LOL.... In one of the games I participated (or rather forced onto the stage) , I was told to wear a saree and make a rampwalk. To add a little glitz to the rampwalk, I added a little bit of vulgarity.
Whatever! It was good enuff....As usual , another man asked me "in which college am i studying". I replied "PESIT".

There is absolutely no news from my side to tell. If anyone of you have anything to tell, I am all ears.....My french managers descend to my next cubicle, today. One week, I will be like this:-

Prisoner
No monkey tricks near the cubicle!!!...My cubicle will be Chateau de 'If

Travel and blog ..

The morning travel (can be called a journey too) to office is quite interesting. I get a plethora of thoughts. I always think I would come and blog over here about the same.

But, as soon as I get down the bus all the thoughts are vanished. ( call it the Infy effect ). There are two solutions to this both of which doesnt seem materialise in the near future..

1. To jot down all my thoughts on a paper and then transalate to e-form. (too lazy for this one)
2. Have a laptop with a wireless connection (too expensive). The latest rumor in office is that we shall be given a laptop for the 25th year celebrations. I personally feel this is crap but hope it comes true ;-)

On a complete different note, we had our project party yday. The plan was two-fold - First watch the movie Crash and then dinner at Sahid Sindh Sultan.
Crash was awesome. I liked the movie a lottt.

The dinner was good too. And I came to know from my DM that our account has been reduced from 1400 to 700 pepole. That's a staggerring loss. Anyways not much I can do about it. I was like, so I am one of those unlucky 700 still to be with this account .. hehehe

NorthEast India

Tourism is big money in India.I heard an ad about "NorthEast India Tourism" today on Radio City.

In the North , we can see the Taj Mahal, the forts of the Moghuls and Delhi, is about QutbMinar and the significant number of buildings and monuments related to Indian Republic and all that.

In the west, we have big cities like Bombay & Pune (I had a great one day tour at Bombay) .And there is Goa. Goa is one major tourist destination.

In the East , we have Kolkata. I really dont know , how much of a tourist place Kolkata is, but everybody knows Bengal has a played a big role during the British Raj days. There are a lot of elements of Bong Culture and I think there will be some tourist places there.

If you think of South, you have god's own country "Kerala" boasting lushgreen equatorial , evergreen , hot deciduous forests and small water streams and all that. Karnataka has its share of green mountains , The Ghats and Malnad region.TamilNadu has its awesome share of South Indian Temples.

But one part of India which is largely "unexplored" is the NorthEast India. I am referring to the "semi chingi" region like Tripura, Nagaland, Assam, Manipur,Mizoram, Sikkim and all those states having a sizeable "chingi" population. The state governments of North East India tried their hands at online lottery system (sikkim lottery) etc. to raise revenues.

But tourism is their latest idea, I think it is a good one too!

I hear a lot of Come to North East India, Paradise Unexplored

I just googled up and here are the places to see in the North East :-
Here it is

I heard that visiting the Manas Sarovar is a herculean task. Anybody been there ?Is it in the NorthEast or am I hallucinating ?

I somehow feel that , these states are, kind of, neglected in India as a whole. We dont hear much about them in the news/newspapers/internet and so on....

Sudeep meets Sudeep...

It was my privilege to introduce our won Pseudip to the cine artist Sudeep - alias Kiccha, in the age old, packed to full house, movie hall Uma. It was the first ever Sudeep movie pseudip ( calling sudeep rg pseudip to avoid confusion) was watching. If I remember it correctly pseudip had taken a vow not to watch any of Sudeep's movie, when this able actor's first movie Sparsha had released.

And what a movie pseudip picks up - My Autograph - I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Its a brilliant narration. Sudeep has excelled not only as an actor but as the director too. The narration, is neat (no vulgarity), though a little slow is just awesome. I think the credit goes to the script, the original being in tamil.

Pseudip was impressed by Sudeep's personality too, and we were discussing about his height and Meena shedding down all the flab amongst many other topics. Meena's character is very very impressive. A person who tries to spred happiness inspite being in the abyss of sadness.

Another unique experience was to watch 4 westerners accompanying a group of kids (probably from an NGO or a slum) to the movie hall. Pseudip was quite impressed with this act and was gaga over them. I had to explain him that u just need a sense of touch to achieve this and not to be a super human. I also told him about various friends of ours who are already involved in such an activity - chilli, aks, dhimant, ameya, kaushik, inder, avinash etc etc...

After the movie we went to mitra stores and had badam milk. The only thing that has changed is the price. The badam milk still tastes the way it used to 15 years back the first time when I had it. The weather was awesome, cool breeze with drops of rain. I had to hurry back home as I had to attend a reception. A great evening.

Pseudip lets have some more

As I write this

piece of shitt, India are struggling at 155/4. Same old story. All eyes are on Sachin and its the same old clash between Sachin disciples and haters on KEC sports.

Other news includes

JP Morgan Chase down grades Infy stocks. The firm says that Infy is facing a middle level management crisis (problem with 3-6 exp people). Well the employees also feel the same. I am suprised how JP Morgan can hit on the nail. No wonder it is one of the leading firms.

Looks like Dhimant has quit Honeywell for his MBA at ISB(updates from Laks's blog). Though I knew of his decision to quit, was not sure of his last date at Honeywell.
GOOD LUCK DUDE.

I am still pondering whether to travel to Sabarimala with Avi & Chilli or not.
I would certainly said YES if the destination was GOA.

On a random note -

What does a layman like me think about the nuclear deal ?
Well though I am not ecstatic over the whole issue, I was happy.
The reaction from the scientific community says a different story. Scientists are not happy about India's decision to open up the 14 reactors to IAEA scrutiny. They worry that our indigenious technology might be duplicated. On the contrary they are happy that we will be obtaining unlimited enriched Uranium supplies.

My question is by when would the effect of this deal impact the common man ? 2015 ??

29th main

one certainly should travel on this road connecting bannerghatta main road to BTM main road. Its an experience. The residents of this are so frustrated that they have kept huge stones on the road (assuming it and not certain) which make the journey even more cumbersome.

I am proud that the roads in my village in chitradurga is far far better.
My village is also has an Airtel tower :) (outta context ignore)

FMMMMMMM...

not Finance Minister but the radio city, FM rainbow and 102.9 kamapananka ..
Why cant they do without RJs. Vasanthi .. arghhhhhhhhhhh..
101.3 and 102.9 ..my goodness .. I dont even have an idea how can they be selected. Probably AIR chief's relatives are given a chance ..

btw, anyone tuned into 101.3 and 102.9 there were some lovely kannada songs played today... amrutavarshini, halu jenu, jogi, NMH etc etc ..

Orkut and Brazil

Initially, I thought the name "Orkut" had to do something with "OR"acle Connections or something like that. I came to know that Orkut was designed by a guy named Orkut Büyükkökten. working in google (as a small independent project). It seems google encourages its employees to work projects of personal interest. (And ofcourse employees do that....because, they are that good )

But recently Orkut = Brazil.

Related links :- 1 2

The orkut community has been watching a large surge of Brazilian users registering on its service. The number of Brazilian orkut users has reached approximately 73.25% of the total of users, followed by United States, with about 9.93%. Then we have Iran and Pakistan.

Hence the deault language of Orkut may be changed to Portugese!

Vasco Da Gamma ki jai ....lol !

PS:- I have re-entered orkut. I went out for some shady reason, and I am back again.

Decline ?

Well , yesterday as I drove along with the radio on, a question was posed to a good Kannada film director called Mohan. I have listed the GIST of what I heard.

Ofcourse, i have paraphrased the gist of what I heard :-)

Interviewer :-
Dont you think , the audience for Kannada movies is on the decline ?

Director :-
Yes of course.

Interviewer :-
Why dont we have great literary figures and poets , like we had Yesterday? Why dont we have Chi.UdayaShanker ?

Director :-
Look, nobody is born a great literary figure. They become great literary figures because of patronage. You give them encouragement, they'll do well.We know that there is a good market for Kannada movies. But the scriptwriters cater to the "audience" which PAY their money to actually GET UP and COME to the theatres.Your urban Kannada audience is lazy to come to a theatre and watch the movie.

I agree with the guy completely.Instead of bathing on past glories like Gejje Pooje or Masanada Hoovu, we gotta lend our time and extend patronage on a movie industry which kinda looks doomed .This may not be possible for people who are outside Bangalore or Karnataka. But people who are still here, can actually do that!

When I ask my cousins or friends (ofcourse , the ones who speak Kannada), to come for Kannada movies, their expression is :-
Thuu....Neeenu idakella hogtya ? Nange nodakke patience illa....

As far as reading books are concerned, I was never good in reading Kannada.I still take a lot of time to read one full sentence intact. So, I have kind of given up on that. But movies...I dont mind watching a Kannada movie with a black ticket.

Any audience wants movies which they can identify with.Right now , most of the movies we have is for the en machi audience. 18 year old punk rebel boys who are pissed off to attend their college (which is usually , not your elitist college). These 18year olds are usually the so-called "rural class". This was mentioned by the director also . And ofcourse, we have the cult movies for the autodriver audience. (A big percentage of autodrivers are Kannada speaking people)

So what happens to the "urban" Bangalore boy ? Ofcourse, the Bangalore boy who is brought up fully in the city, finds himself more comfortable watching movies which have a John Smith driving a Newyork Yellow Colored Taxi cab , than watch a movie which has ByreGowda riding a tractor carrying cowdung. I dont blame him either. They watch movies where the word "homicide...lieutenant" is used more than "kollay.....circle inspector".Dont you think so?

The movies which make money right now are Hodimaga, machchu, longu audience.....

But the TV scene in Karnataka is making BIG BUCKS.The urban Kannada audience and the uncles and aunties prefer to sit and watch TV teleserials. The teleserial "Mukta" is REALLY good. The director had organized a dialogue to discuss the future plot of the serial. He has been doing that everywhere in Karnataka.Just a few weeks ago, he organized a dialog in Mumbai.I mean, to draw a packed audience in Mumbai about discussing the future plot of a KANNADA teleserial is not a joke. And have a viewership of more than 30 lakh is not a joke.Kudos to him.

But it irks me when shitty somberi urban Kannada audience are glued to their seats and dont bother to watch any Kannada movies.

And to be very frank,I am doubtful that Kannada TV serials can build a "culture". Sitcoms in India have always remained an inferior step-cousin to movies and will continue to be like that for some time to come.

A Sitcom is like a wonderful Saaru anna/ Chapathi. You enjoy it for the moment, later it is forgotten. Because you eat it everyday.

But a movie is like an exotic dish you have someday. Which can actually make an impact.

Album covers - Abbey Road

If any one of you get this album Abbey Road , almost all the songs of this album are simply FANTABULOUS.That is word.I love all the songs of this album. However, the most interesting aspect of this album is the album cover. When you type "Beatles" on Google Image Search, you get it.

beatles

Check out the cover of the album (bigger pic) here.

It just shows four men in different attires crossing a road. However, there are many interpretations for this cover. This one was told to me by my friend.

John Lennon,is dressed in White. He is supposed to represent Jesus.
If you have heard his music , you will actually know he is a god

Ringo is dressed all in black. He is supposed to represent the priest who is supposed to do the funeral rights.

Paul , doesnt wear shoes, and has a cigarette in his hands. He is supposed to represent a dead man to be carried to a funeral.Lead by Jesus and the priest.

George Harisson is in Jeans and he is supposed to represent an undertaker.

Wow! wonderful album cover.

Some album covers are too hard to decipher. How do you decipher...... Nevermind (Nirvana's breakthrough album)?

Other death metal bands bring out inhuman covers.....with no respect to human dignity showing the blood, intestines and all....Very negative image. But people (like the spooky guy carrying a camera in the movie American Beauty) might actually enjoy that....You got to keep an album cover simple yet artistic.

Sidenews :-
Meanwhile, I have started to practice keyboard.I hope, I will soon graduate to piano so that I can sweep an attractive woman wearing a silky gown and drinking red wine off her feet. "Riders on the Storm" is a great way to start off my keyboard experiments.Ray Manzarek is my newest role model. The song is awesome expecially in rainy afternoons.....Hope I'll learn to play it.

arcelor .. or arse e lore ..

Too much of Arcelor stuff :(, infact more than the Danish controversy. GRRR
Mittal is on NDTV, CNN, AAJ TAK, CNBC and soon you will see him on E-tv, udaya and Sun TV too.

Here is another NRI (still with an Indian passport) going for an all Indian support for an European deal. Should the govt of India support his cause ?? and I yes Y ??
Why should the PM burn his ass out to clinch a deal for Mittal ?? Why cant we just look for civil nuclear facilities and aim at getting discounts for the Air buss .. or even try and get Air bus open their factory here ...

Mittal suddenly is hoisting the "Global India flag". He has also mentioned about the French CEO slamming the phone in a TV interview. Mittal is fighting business through politics .. Well really its an issue with "arse e lore "

Suddenly GD has become insane .........

Toon controversy and our minister..

this is the quote by the minister of minority welfare in UP in rhetort to the cartoon controversy..

"Any person who chops off the head of the cartoonist from Denmark who dared to make a caricature of Mohammad Sahib and bring it to me shall be rewarded Rs 51 crore in cash and given gold equivalent to his weight,"

Hail India and its leaders .. Whats the secular congress doing ?
If he could spend those 51 crores on welfare .. tch tch tch ..

this is heights of vote bank politics ..

add to this Mayawati's statement ..
" India should terminate all ties with Denmark and get the Indian ambassador back" phewwwwwwwwwwwwwww.. what else shall we do ?

there is absolutely no rationale is damaging the public property of the country in name of religion .. we had the babri masjid , godhra , and now cartoon controversy ..

It is very disheartening that the percieved notion of people ...
CASTE has a higher preference over RELIGION and RELIGION over country ..

Jus imagine

If this genius had still been alive....!

I think the single most greatest loss for the Kannada industry is this guy....

shankar

Why is he so great ?
Or, rather, why am I such a big fan of him ?

His no nonsense narration and extreme understanding of the old mysore style culture made him script and direct some of the best films in Kannada Industry. And his understanding of the expectations of THEATRE actors in movies was good.

1) Utsav ( I was trememdosuly influenzed by this movie....It is based on Shudraka's Mrichakatika...The best part of Utsav is, the story is based on Merchants , traders and commmon man....unlinke many other dramas written by other Sanskrit writers (like Bhasa or Kalidasa or Baanabhatta) which were usually based on Kings....My unfinished script "The Brahmin" ...it will use the same costumes...based on the same era....Hope it will see the light of the day ;-)...Will keep the readers informed abt it ! )

2) Malgudi Days . This is getting telecasted on a channel called "Pogo".

3) Swamy and his friends
(I was a freaking Swamy , in my school days! )

4) Accident (Really awesome movie)

5) Parameshi Pranaya Prasanga (The name may seem very odd and I dunno what it means. But the characterization is brillaint)

6) Sangliyana 1 & 2 + CBI Shankar (His more "commercial" movies. He just had style and the suave looks and a superb voice.)

7) Ondaanondu Kaaladalli (Again an excellent theme)

8) Nodi Swamy, Naavu Irodu Heege.

9)Auto Raja (For actually identifying & establishing a CULT audience in Kannada movies....viz Auto Drivers!! He also created the concept of "Auto Stands" in key areas of Bangalore)

10) And my favorite "Minchina Ota".....I cant stop raving about this movie...And the prisoners are imprisoned in Belgaum !!! Wow ...Belgaum rocks !! ;-)

Shankar Nag....

And then, I had been to the Jethro Tull Concert. It was simply awesome!!!!

"One two three FOH"

I simply ADORE the British Accent.....It is simply delightful....And the wit of Ian Anderson......
There were two distinct classes of people attending the concert. The oldies (in their 40s and 50s) who actually knew who Jethro Tull was....And the other class who just wanted to attend a damn concert of "somebody"....HMM WHATEVER...The second class consisted of attractive females and their companions.....So I dont wanna complain :-)

He sang many songs of "Aqualung" and the "Thick as a Brick" solo was really satisfying.....
Ian also performed a Mozart medley in a very Jethro Tull style.....
Ian saved his best songs like Locomotive Breath and Mother Goose ...etc for the last......But the disappointing part was Martin Barre , the lead guitarist of Tull was missing........

And one thing :- Thermal and a Quarter (a "namma bangalore" band which , I didnt like ) has REALLY EVOLVED.....The guitarist (Mani) has improved like hell.....

Check out their new album from this link. It is interesting that they have a license modelled like a GNU Public license !!!!!!!

Smile

Plastic smiles suck. Dont smile if you dont feel like smiling.
It's great when a smile spreads into the eyes.

Otherwise it just looks realistic.
Okay that was a cynical statement.

But most of us feel like this :-
haha

Well , it will actually make people laugh :-)

Hehehe....I saw one guy like this, just now.
But I understand there might be 100,000 problems in his head.
But a good smile might make him happy too!

Also, there is no point in being extra happy when you meet someone special.
This is a note exclusively meant for people like me :-)

One word.
It looks stupid..

Jik chik jik chik

Jethro Tull is gonna be in Bangalore. The name sounds more like "Jet Throttle"....
They'll play at the IIMB campus.Tickets at 600/=.

Btw, "Jethro Tull" was a great agriculturist who revolutionized agriculture in Old Victorian England.

A very good band......A maverick frontman with a flute....

This band sufferes from over-productivity.By the time the listeners can appreciate one album of theirs, there are three more albums in the market.Something like Steven Spielberg.....Keep on giving us great movies and experimenting like hell....Scifi , History , Humanitarian , Contemporary , Comedy....

However, I admit the BEST features of any 60s and 70s bands was the sound. The sound was because of touring non-stop and recording TOGETHER. The cameraderie is HEARD when they play together. The sound is so human.

Nowadays there are even playback concerts.....Bah! At the Indian movie scene, Why cant Hindi movies try a orchestrated band sound ? English, Hindi songs , Kannada songs and Tamil songs today are so artificial.....If you have heard Sonu Nigam's "Main Hoon Na" or Shankar Mahadevan's "Breathless" , you damn well know that they are BORINGLY perfect. Each person does his bit and later everything is mixed. Ofcourse you can get the best of everybody, but the "feel" of "joint effort" and simplicity is lost.....We need a change in the sound. Try a joint recording after a lot of practice sessions with all the musicians.....And more importantly keep the MUSIC simple and keep a very few instruments and concentrate on riffs and let each instrument have a definite role and have an impact....Remember the genius of Morricone....It may actually click!

Especially the Kannada Music Director GuruKiran.Although his melodies are hummable, there are so many redundant instruments.

The Art of Politics - Divide and Conquer

Once upon a time, Donald Knuth was taking a class on Divide and Conquer strategy to a class of Indian politicians who wanted "logic and rationale" , so that they could apply to "politics".

Given an instance of the problem to be solved, split this into several, smaller, sub-instances (of the same problem) independently solve each of the sub-instances and then combine the sub-instance solutions so as to yield a solution for the original instance. This description raises the question:

One of the students HD Devegowda gave a huge laugh.

id en mahaaaa.....This is what I've been doing all the time

He went on to explain Knuth on why he knew this strategy :-

I had a problem : I need the power, my modjo.

I split it into several sub-problems :

1.This time I cannot win the elections ALONE. I need an alliance.

2.Also I cannot trust Congress, as they have supported Siddu , my newest arch rival. If Siddu came to power, I would be finished. He also called me Hitler, when I dumped him.

3.I cannot OPENLY support BJP. I have claimed to be "secular" all my life.I will lose my Muslim votes.

SOLUTION :

Write, Produce, Direct a script called "Dari Tappida Maga" (The wayward son) and make Kumaraswamy as the Hero.

SPLIT the JD(S) into two parties.

Send Kumaraswamy to exile and play the role of a wailing father and accrue sympathy of valuable voters

Supporting BJP using Kumaraswamy as the mascot from JD(S) will have the following benefits:-
a) keep Siddu out of power.
b) teach a lesson for Congress for dumping me at the Panchayat level.
c) the best compromise obtainable.

After Kumaraswamy and 40 theives (like Alibaba and 40 thieves) join hands with BJP,
issue a statement like this :-

For the interest of the state, we need a stable Government. Since we dont have any other option, we will form the government with BJP. But if they indulge in any nefarious activities like Communalism and Regionalism, we shall be like a watchdog and immediately withdraw the support.

The power hungry BJP have no other option but to admit Blackmailer #1 , Devegowda.
This will be their first time to form a government. Senior people at BJP have waited for long , for this moment in their lives.

The next elections, the alliance led by JD(S) and BJP will get 40 % of votes and Cong and Siddu may get 35 % of votes. The rest of the MLAs will be bought by the BJP and JD(S) alliance and we will again form a government.

Donald E Knuth was flabergasted. He bowed to Devegowda.

This is my most pessimistic prediction, given the fact , that I hate the scum called Devegowda and many of the other politicians on this planet.

Activists

Amitabh Bachchan has landed in trouble for posing with a cigar. Because of the bloody anti tobacco activists. If they are so concerned about tobacco , why dont they educate people in high schools.
They dont. They want money. They want money from law suits.

If it is really a tobacco problem why sue Amitabh ? Sue the marketing people and the people who devised the Ad-Campaign

Poor Amitabh. He actually wrote an apology letter.Ofcourse he does have a social responsibility, but if a role should have an IMPACT, u need the right accessories. For example:-
You cannot have Marlon Brando potraying GodFather "Don Corleone" and drinking Tender Coconut water.

Another really irritating issue is that of Paris Hilton. This is really crap. There are several dogs dying on the road.Nobody is concerend about that. They are concerned about "Tinkerbell".

Hotel heiress Paris Hilton has been severely criticized by many animal rights activists for having dumped her pampered dog Tinkerbell because she grew too big.

Apparently, Paris has left the dog in her mother’s care, as it has grown past its ideal weight of 3.5 pounds (1.6 kilograms), and now she’s pampering a smaller Chihuahua named Bambi.

These animal activists and all the *.* activists are after money of the biggies. There should be a separate law which should restrict the damage claimed by this bufoonic activists.

Tinted glass

There is a new rule that all our netas formulated. It went something like this :-

Let there be light entering your cars. We dont want any kind of actions inside the cars and taxis.Becuase terrorists go in cars. Because people get very naughty in cars.

Soon the traffic policemen started to organize free opacity camps, and tested the how transparent you cars are.

Like an alert citizen (which I never was) I removed all the sunscreens of my car, and it is looking like a 1950s car now.

Soon, our dumb netas realised that even their own freaking privacy, and safety will be evaded.

So today I see a new headline saying :-

The tinted windscreen rule is with held under further notice

So, some ullus like me have to get a new tinted glass.

Grrr!

Well , I came to know about the "Future Me" website which enables you to send an email to yourself in the future.

Just imagine that one fine day you open your mailbox and you receive a mail which was sent by you say 5 years ago! What were your expectations then ? How has reality changed them (or is it going on as planned?).....Lots of thought can go into preparing this mail......

I think it is a great idea !

Here is the website .....Go ahead and write yourself a mail!

Regarding the Permutation problem, there is one solution I found by Yahooing....(and later googling)

If you are interested, check out these two links :-

This contains a C code This was found by Googling.Didnt understand a bit.Very bewildering.

This contains an explanation of the C-code above (in my opinion) This was found by Yahooing.

Anyway , it is a problem for which papers have been written, as Teju has just pointed out. Which means it is a difficult one.

Have to get the time to understand these kinda problems !!

Monday, January 02, 2006

Tough one

I could not solve this problem given to me by an engineering student.Argh!
First of all, it is a difficult problem or an easy problem ?

Write a function long count(String N, int M) which returns the number of permutations which are divisible by M.

Example :-
String N = "2753"
and
int M = 5

Returns: 6

The permutations of 2753 that are divisible by 5 are 2375, 2735, 3275, 3725, 7235 and 7325.
and M can have values from 1 to 50.

The only method I can think of is :-

1.Generate all permutations for the string N and store it somewhere like a list or an array.

2.For each element of the list or array, divide by M...IF IT IS DIVISIBLE, increment the counter.

3.Return that counter.

Fine. But how do we do step -1

Whats happening to my city ?

Godammn it......

Well how the hell can anybody think that professors can be potential terrorist targets....IISc professors....Well, these people would have devoted their whole lives thinking about something like "Novel multi-band quantum soliton states for a derivative nonlinear Schrodinger model" ....
Cant imagine IISc as a terrorist target. Why not ?In Bangalore BGSE would be a terrorist target / Infosys can be a terrorist target/theatres and malls/ISRO/ADA ....But nobody can imagine IISc as a target....

However, I dont think these shootings are related to Abu Salem's. If they actually were, they could have kidnapped un-suspecting professors and demanded release of Salem.

Then the other theory about some people having grudge on some professors. Thats also impossible. It was just an indiscriminate spray of bullets. It must be terrorists of some organization....You cannot expect possession of AK56 and grenades from anyone else....

Whatever....But the outcome is pretty clear....There are terrorists in & around the city.....After this incident and the other one (the rape and murder of a call center female worker) , these are some bad times to Bangalore.

Hope these incidents are stray incidents and let's hope things are back to normal asap.

Neal and Nikki

I am back to office after seeing a movie called "Neal and Nikki" ......What can I say ? :-(
I hadnt heard of this movie.....I thought I bought tickets for another movie called "Bluffmaster", but I bought tickets for "Neal and Nikki"...........

This is the best movie I have seen since decades.....I just want to explore the psyche of director....or the screenwriter of this movie....I think they were hired by a rival company to screw Yash Chopra beyond recognition...I think Yash Chopra will be tearing his (few) hair after seeing this movie....Man! You gotta WATCH this movie.....Grab SOMEBODY AND WATCH THIS MOVIE!

Gone are the days when you actually seek IMPACT in movies/art....The latest way to appreciate art is, TO TEST your endurance.....Thats the IN-THING.....If you can endure the whole movie without saying a word then, You are the man.... You are the mature lover of art.....You are the ultimate patron of art....

My reflexes have become slower....This is the third time , I went to get tickets for that godammn gorilla movie, "King Kong" and everytime, I dont get the tickets and I land up seeing yet another stupid movie.....

"Neal and Nikki", if the name irritates you, then TRY the movie.....Just TRY it....

I watched Kalyug yesterday.....I loved a song, which was supposedly sung by a Pakistani duo.....The movie was really mature compared to this stupid Neal and Nikki movie...

However, Neal and Nikki is like a Feroze Khan movie without any stylish villians or any script......I dunno why they make such movies.....Looks like this movie mite be a hit .....Who knows ?

Neal and Nikki storyline ? Who cares ? Just this much :-

Well , well , well.

Merry Christmas to everybody.

Ho!! Ho!! ho!!!

Literally.

Since there are no reindeer in Bangalore, we have the tonga horses , everywhere.
And Tonga drivers (very few of them, are morphed into Santa).

All the junta are getting totally obsessed with Santa(Santa Junta), whether they are in Norway or Bangalore. Were there so many Santas on the roads last year ? No. Oh I dont think so. This year they are selling santa's red caps near traffic jams.Instead of the glass wiping yellow cloth.

Ho! Ho!! Ho!!!

Time to get inebriated or enubriated or inebria or whatever.....
I saw a movie called "Life hoto aisi"....I went to see Amrita Rao....

The film has a happy ending.
I am happy that it ended.

If you really think you have a high cinematic endurance quotient, I challenge you this movie.

Wrong #

It's been a hard day's night, and I've been working like a dog, it's been a hard day's night, I should be sleeping like a log.

It is 3:00 A.M and I am slumbering. Incessant ringing of the phone wakes me up.

Me: yaaru idu?
Caller: Who is this?
( Someone calls you up in the middle of the night, and then asks you who this is?? )

Me: This is Sumanth.
Caller: Sumaanth ( right inflexion per accent and all ).

Me: This is Sumanth, and you seem to have got the wrong number.
Disconnects.

I then realize, that I have left the caller of too easily. So I have slept for 3 hours this afternoon. So that I can be up tonight, and return the call, and get to know the former caller better :).

P.S: Reminds me of the Birbal story. Where this linguist comes over to Akbars court, and none of them can identify his mother tongue. Then when he is sleeping, he is startled awake, and he yells in his mother tongue.

Going on a break

Advanced birthday wishes to Richie Jag (tomorrow)

Richie, have a great time on your Birthday!

I have the holidays. I am not at office for a week. So people , wish you happy holidays...

I am back! (doing something which I, I think, I do better than something which I was doing all these three days.) But that something I do better is something which is not really required.Who cares!

Time to put something running in my mind to rest. Time to move on with something else.Time to stop thinking.Something in my mind tells me when you stop thinking, it feels good.

PT masters

As I play Lynnrd Skynnrd, I came to know that they named their group after their PT master, Leonard Skinner.

School days are unique, because we enjoyed small bursts of freedom, amidst the tightening noose.
The PE periods or the P.T. periods were unique. Our school PE periods were of two types :-

a) Games :- Where we would dutifully divide into "Boys" and "Girls". Boys used to play cricket , volleyball (in high school). Girls used to play with rubber rings. The PT master would catch a puff of smoke in the nearest ubiquitous pettige angadi if the PE period was a games period.

b)Drills :- Base drummer hits the big fat drum.PT master whistles One-two-three-four.
"Sudeep stretch your hands fully" whack comes the stick.Usually whacks from PT sirs were on the knuckles. It used to pain like hell.

c)Marchpast periods :- The whistle , the scorching sun , the marchpast and the salute to the chief guest. And make a straight line with a one-and-a half-arm-distance.
eyes right! check 1 - 2 - 3 -4 .......left right left

The PE masters were sometimes the only adult men in my school (apart from the security guard). There were fun, when we came to high school. I remember my earliest PT master was a big hit with the girls , who became a police constable. The second PT master was a flutist. He had scolded me when I had laughed during the national anthem, as a buffalo passed in front of me, I could not control laughter! The third PT master was a notorious fellow. He promised the whole school hockey sticks and left the school after collecting the money....The fourth one was a major flirt with the teachers and a very close friend of ours at high school.Thats the first time I ever bunked a class with my PT master and went to the movie "Gentleman". At school level bunking a day was considered as "blasphemy" (at least at my school). At middle school level I dont remember nothing else but the canes. It seems like a long forgotten past.

Question for the Euclids

euclid

I found this info about Googolhedron here

Googolhedron - A 3 dimensional shape bounded by 1 x 10^100 similar polygons. This shape would look very much like a sphere. Having this many sides or facets would make it smoother than any man made object. Although, you could never have a googolhedron because there are not a googol particles in the universe.

Does it mean that a PERFECT sphere has an infinite number of polygons and hence does not exist?

How many faces does a sphere have ?
I just read an article on bigger needles for fat people. . However, one thing which is objectionable the heading which reads:-

Long Needles For Large Butts
More obesity means even syringes aren't long enough anymore.
What the hell are we so hungry for?

Why the @%#@$#@ are journalists bothered abt food habits of people ?

Well , this obsession with thinness in women is quite recent and the thin look is IN for sometime.Kate Moss , Esther Canadas typify this extremely thin waif look. But, if you see the 14/15/16th century paintings of the french painters and italian painter, BOTH women and men have some fat on their tummies. The catch is healthiness. And if you have a healthy look , like the laughing budhdha on your face, it is just great ! The movie shrek captures this sentiment very well.

I remember this proverb in Kannada :-

Oota tann itche , NoTa parara itche.....

I will add one more modification to the above proverb :-

Diet Doctor itche.

Prof v/s student

Scene 1: Project submission (intermediate)

Lopars: Sir, we are here for the demo.
Prof: uhuu

Lopars: This system is so *** intelligent, given a minimal amount of input can learn the state of the world.
Prof: uhuu, what is novel about this?

Lopars: ( who have just heard that frameworks are in ).
hmmm, we have the framework built, we can test out our new ideas, when we get them.
Prof: uhuu

Housefly idea
==========
A housefly idea is a special kind of huLa idea. This type of idea is the kind that irritates you at night, has the buzzz, and come daylight, vanishes.

After many housefly ideas, finally got a novel idea, and all ends well with the course.

Somedays ago, we had a session with a few GSM architects and seniro managers of our clients.
These people have been working on GSM since 1991 (when I was 11 years old). Our clients are one of the top telecom companies.

Then there was the questions round.

Question :-
============
Since we at India, are doing monotonous maintenance and sustenance work, we will never climb up the value ladder. We can never become architects like you guys, isnt it ? When will we get into development work ?

One of the architects put it short & sweet and said :-

If you people are motivated by challenge, then the difficulty level of bugs are as follows :-

1. Bugs found during Coding and Design (least complexity)
2. Bugs found during component level integration
3. Bugs found during system testing.
4. Bugs found during maintenance after deployment.(extremely complex)

But the person who raised the question was not exactly convinced.
There is a general notion that development is a superior job among us.
Sometimes it is tr.ue, but imo, each job has its share of challenges (for people driven by challenges). You dont need to look down upon system testing and maintenance.

Then the MBA manager(IIT+IIM guy) came to the picture. He gave a beautiful answer.

Ofcourse development is important, there are people who are doing development,But they lack the big picture most of the time. The real DREAM development job is a responsible one done by a few percentage of architects, who sketch out the functionalities based on their experience. If you consider extremely successful product companies like Microsoft, then more than 70 % of the engineers are into maintenance and sustenance. If your company is spending most of the time just in development and more development, and no time on sustenance, it means your products are not successful in market. The greater the number of products into sustenance and support, the better they have fared in the market and they are more successful.

I agree totally with the MBA guy.

Speaking of Microsoft, Bill was in Bangalore. He announced a Code for Bill Contest in Palace Grounds.

However, it seems VTU is making it compulsory to use Microsoft Products like Word and Excel for VTU Final year Projects and this has pissed of the Free Software Community.

In my previous post ,I meant by "Flexi timings is a slow killer in my opinion.", I meant "Flexi timings is a slow killer of teamwork " and nothing else.

I still believe that flexi timings kill team work no matter even if you use holographic projections for attendees of meetings,(like the ones they show in the movie "Minority Report" for conducting TEAM MEETINGS)

So , guys at office , no offense .... // grins //

Avuncular post

As of now, Ambassador which was the Maharaja of Indian Cars has no takers among laymen car buyers. However this is a very popular car with the Defense personnel. Although the car may look a little bigger than your esteems and ford ikons it is definitely a pleasure to sit inside the car, and it adds a classic look especially if it has steel bumpers. The best part is it is a totally Indian car.A big leader inside a sedan looks really bland. It has to be an ambassador or a limo!

Speaking of army people , I met a friend of mine who gave up his job at infy and joined the navy two years ago. He was just telling me about how it feels being six months on ship and six months on land and all that. It seems a ship travels max at 60kmph ! Most ships travel at 30kmph and 40kmph and can be self-sufficient for 15 days.If it is raining , the ship acts like a giant-wheel causing sea sickness, to people in it.It takes 5 days to sail nonstop to dubai from Visakapatnam. He had also sailed to Lisbon. The best part was , he used "she" subconsciously to refer a ship, not "it". eg:- "She can sail nonstop for 15-days".....

The cons + pros of an army(or navy) is authority. It teaches you to conduct properly in front of authority. However if there is too much authority and your bosses are a bunch of fools, then you have a problem.

One of the biggest pros of army is DISCIPLINE. It teaches you to respect time and teaches a lot about commitment.Something we learn in school and unlearn in college and take pride in being "free".As I open my mailbox today I see a forward titled "Inside Google Office".The obsession and lust for google continues all over the world. It shows employees bringing dogs, cats and having a colorful cubicles with photos and stickers all around the place, pizzas and cola bottles in the cubicles...etc and yes "flexi timings". Flexi timings is a slow killer in my opinion. (and yes my opinion may change according to my mood). It just ruins discipline and people take pride in saying "My highest priority is family work". Why work late or why work early. Just come at one time and go back at the proper time and ensure that work completes on time.Ofcourse I know I sound like a BHEL factory worker today.

Bah!

I just finished a course exam. It was an interesting course. Great teacher. Also got to read up ( not understand ) lines like the following one:
What is the minimum number f = f(n,e) such that every set X of n points in the plane containts a subset S of at most f points such that ever triangle containing atleast en points of X contains atleast one point of S?
Yuppa.

never work for a Indian IT service company

if you are not ready for long hours at office.
Well that leaves you with an option of MNC IT service companies like IBM, Accenture and product companies.

Product companies are for people who missed out on research and want to achieve something on linux. Alas I dont fit in here ..

I want good money and a 9-5 job. Any pointers ??

Generally, there are two attitudes in people who are career minded.

(This post promises to be like a management guru talk , but then who cares, read ,if you are bored)

1.The somwehat traditional people chose "stability" as one of the chief feature of their careers.Defensive approach, naturally. These people tend to settle down

2.The somewhat adventurous people chose "mobility" as one of the chief feature of their careers. These people tend to move on

The traditional approach was especially pronounced in our Indian society. Ever since the caste system, where the jobs became hereditary, we have, kind of, adhered to the conventional approach. Even as late as the 80-s in India, we had families of lawyers and doctors and engineers. The grandfather lawyer wanted the grandson to be a lawyer. The betel-nut grandfather wanted his grandson to grow betel nuts and looks after the several acres of land he had.Although, there were mobility minded people, family rules and culture had such an effect that the son's career was already decided (most of the times) the moment he was born.

However there was a paradigm shift in the late 80s.

-Probably people learnt that change in job may actually make life more interesting.

-Stagnation & Meaninglessness irritated the hell out of people. Especially people in the cities, whose life, I guess is more complicated than a simple (yet very hard working) life in the village.

Why did it happen in the late 80s. I guess, thats when India started to grow rapidly, than in the 70s or early 80s.

NOW, In India, "mobility mentality" exists NOT ONLY in the white collar jobs, but also blue collar jobs.Blue collar workers are also very mobility minded. I talked yesterday to an auto driver, who was a bhel puri boy before and before that, he worked as an electrician apprentice fixing serial lights for house warming ceremonies.I asked him what prompted him to change the profession. He said "jana change kelthaare, adikke" and that he was motivated by more money which he was sure he couldnt have by sticking to one kind of profession.

In white collar jobs, Software Engineers & Managers are expecially mobility minded because of the various options available.

I guess, the very "mobility" based mentality started with the birth of the United States of America.I guess , it didnt exist even in the "old world " of the Europe, Asia.

Mr.Teacher has discovered that he is a big bummer. If you try to over explain things you will land confusing the people and also straining yourself because of yaking non-stop.Thats when your ears become allergic to your own voice.Your brain asks your mouth to shut the eff up.This had happened once sometime ago. It's happening again.

So, The Teacher has to adopt a different strategy. It is about silence. Just like Richie's staccato dialogs when playing snooker123 or Mortal Combat. I am gonna be watching.......and giving comments.

Animals and Roads

In our city, the unsaid rule about zebra crossing is :-

"Zebra crossings are meant only for zebras.

Since we dont have many zebras here (I have not seen a herd of zebras crossing any of our roads, till now) the zebra crossings have lost significance.Ask a pedestrian about "why dont you use a zebra-crossing" , he may laugh loudly at you.

This made me think about how animals cross roads.

Animals exhibit unique behavioral patterns while crossing roads :-

a) Stray dogs, usually, are damn good crossers of road....They know a driver's mind.Especially if the driver is a 2-wheeler driver or a four wheeler driver. But they always underestimate the lorries.

b) Cows and buffaloes are really clueless...They STAND.But the best way to deal with a cow on the road, is to blast your way from behind the cow.Cows cant turn around very quickly. However, be careful when it is watering the roads, lifting its tail up :-p

c)Pigs are very confusing. You may find them in marshy places/dirty places. They confuse the hell out of you.

d)Hens and adamant roosters are the most fickle road crossers and most dangerous among animals. You got to be really careful. They can confuse even a cyclist and make him fall.

Teachers

Back after a break.
(No, my back is not broken.....I will take up the posture during typing anything in a later post)

Had a good two day training. This time I was the trainer :-)
I had a great time in explaining things. It is fun to explain.

But I guess a great teacher INSPIRES people not just explains things.
Thats why we remember (atleast most of us remember) our primary school teachers. Their job is really difficult.Try explaining "London bridge is falling down " to a small child.

And being a primary school teacher, is selfless, also.
Because if you are a teacher to a BE/MS/PhD, there might be a motive of putting your name on the project book cover. But as a primary school teacher, you teach something which people KNOW.It is very service oriented profession.

Inspiring adults is very difficult, because you got to be a super-achiever to inspire adults. Otherwise most adults dont give you the respect.

I had attended a small talk about "Why IT clicks in India" by Prof.Sadagopan and I was tocuhed when one of the slides read, "Our Village school masters , still do a good job".

Sepaking of teachers, I observed this link on the VTU official site. One thing which is objectionable is printing salaries against the names of the lecturers.Does a company print the salaries of its employees just like that ?
Another objectionable things is preparing a godammn excel sheet. Why cant they prepare a decent html page listing their profiles? It looks like a godammn voters list page. We, as Indians will never get the right method to do things.

If it is an internal document, why circulate it on the web ?

Some kannada scenes / dialogs

A film is mostly a 80s Kannada Movie if it satisfies one of the following axioms :-

0. Stereotype #0
==================
A god is shown after the certification of the movie.A shloka by PB Srinivas or SPB.

1. Stereotype #1
==================
Police Senior Boss (like Lohitashwa) telling the Hero (like Devaraj or Shanker Nag)

Inspector Pratap , nimmanta NISHTAVANTHA POLICE ADHIKARAIGALU irodrinda ne, namma samaajadalli nyaaya neeti innu irodu...Keep up the good work , my boy! Naavu police aagi Dasayya antha GOMUKHA VYAAGRA rannu nyayalakke tarabeku

"Dasayya" referred in the above sentence is mostly a rowdy MLA or an MP.He usually has a pervert/spoilt brat son in his late 20s addicted to drugs and women.

2. Stereotype #2
==================
Hero(like Dr.Rajkumar or Ambarish) goes to a hifi party where "drinks" are being served. One wealthy man offers the hero a drink.Hero says :-

Sorry sir, nanage idara ABHYASA villa. And takes a torrino or goldspot with a straw

3. Stereotype #3
==================
Oh No!! Damsel in Distress!!!

It is a horrible time for the heroine! She is being chased by the villain and her garments are torn by the villain. She shouts the same old cliched dialog :-

Kaapaadi...Yaardru Kaapaadi

When the villain actually grabs her, the shout becomes,
Bidu Nanna

The hero bashes up the villian and later offers his suit, to cover her up.
He is the chivalrous man.

4. Stereotype #4
==================
Hero (like Dr.Rajkumar or Tiger Prabhakar) goes to a BAR or PUB, to track the baddies ...As bars and pubs are regular hangouts for the rowdies!

Our Heroes are actually police officers or CID officers(not CBI) dressed as dancers to shake a leg in the cabaret song.....Hero says :-

Hello Ms Rosy to the female cabaret dancer.

The question which bugs me in this aspect is :- WHY DID VAMPS HAVE CHRISTIAN NAMES like Rosy or Lucy instead of Annapurna or Savithri ?

5. Stereotype #5
==================
Whenever a hero or a heroine park their car , they always park the car just near to the building (or in front of the building)....But in reality :-(((((....you have to search FOR MANY ROADS to find a decent place to park your car !!! This is true in Hollywood movies also!

6. Stereotype #6
==================
Even though there are n-opponents for a hero in the action scene, the opponents keep waiting dumbly to be beaten up by the hero...

7. Stereotype #7
==================
The BEST cliched scenes in the climax is:-
To tie the mother of the hero, the heroine , child etc etc and put them in cages......The hero first does the initial bashing and finally the police arrive (the background music for the police ALWAYS has to be sidedrum....You cannot have a pungi here, I know)

8. Stereotype #8
==================
Ending:-
a)Shubham (if it is a comedy)
b)the tagline/theme/inference of the movie(if it is a tragedy).

100 % original

This is a paradox. You cant create something which is 100% original. There will be influenzes from many people and you add your take to it and prepare the resulting pot pourri.

This applies to anything in life :-

-> Career (This is where the concept of "role model" helps. You may not try to base your whole career on some perosn "X"

-> Dress (check out Oasis's lead singer copying his role model

->Attitude

->Coding style.

->Everything!!!

I remember this funny saying :-

Copying something from a single person is STEALING, copying something from many people is research.

So,do we need to copy ? Yes and No.
Dont ask me :-)

Weakend

Weekends are weakends , really. Sometimes they SUCK. Especially when the car is in the garage.

My clutch is back to normal, and my car is up and running. For the uninitiated , my car provides B2B solutions to me.(Basement to Basement Solutions)

Zeeds had accompanied me and we had all the standard kutchax and one quick visit to Naga's place, dose camp and a Pani puri shop in BTM layout.Veena's kid is adorable and noisy.....

Maruthi Swift looks too good. The red one.

And the weekend ended with a nonsense comedy called "Along Came Polly". The best part of the movie was Jennifer Aniston.

And yeah , on Sat I met many PESITians.....I am convinced we are all entering the realm of Unclehood and auntiehood. We deny it....but it's happening.

Email Characteristics

I have identified the following email characteristics in people :-

a)Routers
----------
These people have a set of email addresses in their address books. Any forward they get, they just route it to the group, if THEY think is funny/useful etc!.

You might have not seen PHYSICALLY, a "router" kind of person since ages, yet he keeps sending email to you...

I think I belong to this category :-D

b)Originators
--------------------
These people originate spam. They have a theme or a central idea which they want to propogate, they start the spam. (These are a rare species, they have a powerful vision which actually starts off a spam). They are the "root nodes" of a spam and they know what they are doing.

I dont know anyone in this category.

c)Active Repliers
--------------------
They PROMPTLY reply when they get a message. They never start off a conversation, but they are there.

I know four people under this category.

c)Naturally Passive repliers
----------------------------------------
These people are usually bored to type a reply , they prefer calling on the telephone and talking .Many girls come under this category (my observation)

I know Two people under this category.

d)Selectively Passive Repliers
----------------------------------------
These people dont initiate conversation and they are selectively passive, depending on their mood.

I know three people in this category.

Hood vinc ;-)

The attitude of "Get Rich or Die Trying" is so stereotypical, but it is as natural as can get.

"The Vini Vinc Souharda Co-operative Society Limited", is the name of the company which is creating headlines.

Interestingly, the founding director of this company, Shastry, (now popularised by Yellow Journalism TV crims shows as "Vini Vinc Shastry") was a priest in the temple before starting this financial body.

The modus operandi of this instituion was pretty simple.

People invest money, and get an unheard rate of interest. And if you introduce five more people, your interest increases.

Shastry inturn used to invest the money acquired from Vini Vinc in shares and bonds, and thereby support this "get rich" scheme.Initially Vini Vinc, offered really high interest rates and a lot of people made money. Soon, the number of people to receive high interest rates increased like hell and the directors of the company including Shastry, did the vanishing act because, they couldnt pay that much money. The official money made by Vini Vinc is 150 Crores! This company was started in 2003.

Now Shastry the thug, was caught in Andhra Pradesh while making a transaction on Internet.
