City of God
Fellas, I recommend you to see the movie "City of God".
City of God.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well this movie spawns three decades and takes a look into the slums of brazil more specifically the slums in Rio. The film can be described as stark, disturbing and abnormal by an average viewer like me.
It is about a bunch of pre-teen and teen guys fighting for power in the slums and a look into their lives.
The film has so many tense moments (like the usual confrontattion and ego and encounters and all that), dramatic moments (like friendship), disturbing moments (like murdering a kid barely aged 10 years)
The film aims to show that crime is a lucrative career and we have kids talking about moving up the ladder and owning territories. It seems so abnormal yet I was surprised to see it was based on a real story and they showed the real gangsters at the end.It doesnt propose a solution to the problem just highlights the problem and ends like taht.
What I liked about the movie was the sheer number of characters and each one very intricate and detail that it is hard to imagine that so much info. was conveyed to the audience by showing so little of the characters on the screen.The names are very gangster-ish.You have guys whose names are like Li'l Dice who later becomes Li'l Z , you have rocket , you have knockout ned and so on.
AFter seeing the movie I suddenly have the feeling that we have a "better order" over here in India.
But one of the BEST foreign movies I have seen.Dont expect brilliant auteurism , but the story is so detail that it is heard to imagine that somebody actually cooked this story up.
So IMO, if Schindler's List/Amelie/AMerican Beauty were a Director's movie,
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest were an Actor's movie,
this movie is the scriptwriter's movie.
